THE COOPER JEWEL

Robert Thorne Lodge Crest

THE ROBERT THORNE LODGE No.3663
The address, given in Open Lodge by W Bro Kenneth J Hare, PM (3663), PPrJGW, on 18th March 2006 to accompany his Presentation of the
'Cooper Jewel'
to
W Bro HAROLD ALBERT COOPER - P Pr G CHAPLAIN

Bro Cooper, affectionately known in the Lodge as "Curly" or "Jim", the first being obvious - the second I know not.

Today you have reached your 100th birthday and we all wish you a most happy and memorable day. You are, by nature, a humble person; exuding kindness to everyone you meet.

W Bro Cooper was Initiated into Masonry in 1958 and Installed in the Chair of King Solomon in 1973. After his term as Immediate Past Master finished, in 1975, he understudied the then Chaplain and eventually took office as Chaplain in 1979 - the position he has held until this day, becoming the oldest and longest acting officer in the history of the Lodge and, most probably, in the Province of Bristol.

His haunting delivery evokes thoughts of mystical rituals and creates an atmosphere that makes a lasting impression on Candidates and experienced Brethren alike. His dedication should be an inspiration to us all and particularly to future Chaplains of the Lodge.

To mark this occasion, the Lodge members have commissioned a special Past Master's Jewel to be known as "THE COOPER JEWEL", which I have been given the honour to present.

The jewel is similar to a Past Master's Jewel but with the square & plate (with the diagram of the 4th proposition of the 1st book of Euclid) replaced by a gold disc, on the obverse of which is mounted a representation of the Volume of the Sacred law, and with the reverse suitably engraved in your honour.

You, Bro Curly, are the first custodian of the Jewel which we entrust to you, and which we trust will be an inspiration to us all in general and to future Chaplains of the Lodge, in particular.
